Geothermal HVAC Units Are Energy Efficient

Geothermal heat pumps are among the most energy-efficient heating and cooling systems available in Goshen, Indiana. Like other heat pumps, geothermal units do not use as much energy to heat and cool as traditional systems. Instead, they use a small amount of energy to power components that transfer heat energy from a warm to a cool place. In the winter, they extract heat from the ground and transfer it indoors. In the summer, heat is extracted from the interior and transferred into the ground. Compared to traditional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, geothermal HVAC units can reduce energy use by as much as 65 percent.

How Geothermal Heat Pumps Work

Geothermal HVAC systems use energy from the earth to generate heat. Although air temperatures fluctuate throughout the year, below-ground temperatures are between 45 and 75 degrees F year-round depending on where you live. In horizontal installations, pipes are buried four to six feet deep. In vertical installations, pipes may extend several hundred feet below ground. Like traditional HVAC systems, refrigerant converts from liquid to gas and back to liquid as it absorbs and releases heat as it passes through the system.

Factors That Affect Geothermal Efficiency

Ground-source heat pumps have an efficiency of between 400 and 600 percent. This means that for every unit of energy used to run the system, between four and six units of heat will be produced. Efficiency of a GSHP depends on the type of soil, amount of moisture in the soil, and below-ground temperature variation.

Moist soils have better thermal conductivity because moisture retains heat. Shallow installations may be less energy efficient because of fluctuations of underground temperatures. Soil types also affect efficiency.
